Frequently asked questions about this product

Does the GWN7801 power devices over PoE?
No: this is the non-PoE version of the series. Its 8 Gigabit ports carry data only. The GWN7801P, its PoE+ equivalent, powers all 8 ports at up to 30 W each within a 120 W budget.
What are the two SFP slots on this model for?
For a Gigabit fibre uplink: they connect this floor switch to the core switch or to another building, beyond the 100-metre reach of copper. The optical modules are chosen according to the distance and the type of fibre, and are not included.
How many VLANs does this 8-port switch support?
4,000 VLANs, with IEEE 802.1Q tagging, port-based VLANs and voice VLAN, plus VLAN virtual interfaces — enough to separate computers, telephony, cameras and guests on a single unit. GVRP, which would distribute VLANs automatically, is listed as “pending”.
Is this switch noisy in an office?
No, not at all: cooling is passive, with no fan. That is what allows this model to sit on a desk or be mounted on a wall in an occupied room, unlike the 24- or 48-port chassis of the same family.
Can this switch hand out the network's IP addresses?
Yes: it has a built-in DHCP server and DHCP relay, with options 82, 60, 160 and 43, which are used for automatic provisioning of IP phones. DHCP snooping only accepts replies from ports declared as trusted.
How does the switch react to a cabling loop?
STP, RSTP and MSTP block the redundant path, with loop protection, BPDU guard and root guard. Storm control limits bursts of broadcast traffic, and port security shuts down any port whose learned addresses exceed the limit.
Do you need a subscription for cloud management of this switch?
No: GWN.Cloud and GWN Manager are offered at no extra cost, and the controller is already built into the switch's web interface. Three modes therefore coexist — local web, cloud, or a platform installed on your server — with CLI and SNMP in addition.
How many links can you aggregate on this model?
Eight aggregation groups, which leaves plenty of room to double the uplink by combining two copper ports or the two fibre slots. Bandwidth increases and the link survives the loss of a cable.
What internal performance does this 8-port model offer?
20 Gbps of switching capacity, 14.88 Mpps and 10 Gbps of total non-blocking throughput, in store-and-forward mode. The MAC address table holds 8,000 entries and the packet buffer reaches 4.1 Mbit.
How do you restrict network access from a network outlet?
With 802.1X backed by RADIUS or TACACS+, complemented by four-way IP-MAC-VLAN-port binding, MAC address filtering, IP Source Guard, ARP inspection and 1,500 IPv4 and IPv6 access control rules.
Is the switch new, and where can you find its documentation?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. The manufacturer's document covers the GWN7800 series and lets you compare this 8-port model with the 16- and 24-port versions: datasheet (PDF).
