Are the 48 ports on this Catalyst 2960 Gigabit?
No: they are 10/100 Mbps. Only the two Gigabit or SFP ports go faster, and they serve as the uplink. It is an access switch for computers and terminals that do not need Gigabit.
How many VLANs does this switch support?
Up to 255 VLANs, with 802.1Q tagging. That is more than enough to segment a floor or a building: computers, telephony, cameras and guests each get their own network.
What security protections does this switch provide?
MAC address filtering, access control lists and 802.1X authentication, with RADIUS or TACACS+, encrypted access via SSH version 2 and SNMPv3 monitoring. An unknown computer plugged into an outlet stays off the network.
