Frequently asked questions about this product

Can the 2930F JL255A route between VLANs?
Yes, it is a Layer 3 switch: static routing — 256 routes —, RIP v1, v2 and RIPng, as well as Access OSPF in OSPFv2 and OSPFv3. That is ample headroom to let several subnets talk to each other without an external router, as long as the architecture stays within the limits of Access OSPF.
What are the limits of Access OSPF on this model?
A single OSPF area and eight interfaces at most. This is the caveat to know before building a routed topology: the 2930F does access-level OSPF, not network-core OSPF. Beyond that, routing has to move up to an aggregation device.
How many VLANs can be active simultaneously on this switch?
2,000 VLANs active at the same time, with IDs taken from the full 802.1Q range of 4,094 values. RPVST+ also builds one spanning tree per VLAN, which makes better use of redundant links, and private VLANs isolate workstations within the same segment.
Can several 2930F switches be stacked and managed as one?
Yes, up to eight switches thanks to front-panel VSF stacking: the stack is managed as a single chassis, with a ring topology that survives the failure of a member. This is what sets this model apart from standalone access switches.
How are the 370 W of PoE+ shared across the 24 ports?
370 W to share, with 30 W maximum per port in 802.3at. Around twenty 12 W cameras fit comfortably, while a dozen high-power Wi-Fi access points use up most of the budget. Power is allocated using several methods, including LLDP-MED, and the switch also powers pre-standard PoE devices.
What happens when an Aruba access point is plugged into a port?
The switch recognises it and automatically applies the associated settings: VLAN, class of service, maximum PoE power and PoE priority. The port therefore configures itself for an access point, which reduces the risk of error during deployment.
What uplinks does this model offer?
Four 1/10 GbE SFP+ slots, with no intermediate PHY layer: the link to the network core runs at 10 Gbps over fibre, or stays at Gigabit with a 1G module. The 128 Gbps switching capacity and 95.2 Mpps throughput keep up without creating a bottleneck.
Can this switch be managed without going through the network?
Yes, out-of-band management is provided, via an RS-232C serial port or micro-USB. In-band, the choice is wide: web interface, command line, Telnet, SNMP, RMON1, FTP, and the Aruba Central, AirWave and HPE IMC platforms. Useful when the switch no longer responds on its IP address.
How much buffer memory does this switch dedicate to traffic peaks?
12.38 MB of packet buffer, split into 4.5 MB ingress and 7.875 MB egress, with 1 GB of DDR3 SDRAM, 4 GB of eMMC memory and a dual-core Arm Cortex A9 processor at 1,016 MHz. This sizing absorbs bursts without dropping packets.
How much electrical power and rack space should you plan for?
Allow 445 W maximum — including the 370 W of PoE — on a 100-127 or 200-240 V input. The chassis measures 442.5 × 304.2 × 43.9 mm and weighs 3.9 kg, i.e. 1U high but more than 30 cm deep: a shallow wall-mount cabinet will not do.
How many links can be aggregated, and across how many switches?
LACP 802.3ad aggregation combines up to eight links per trunk, and trunks remain active across a stack — the same aggregation group can therefore rely on ports spread over several members. Losing one chassis then does not cut the uplink.
What network security features does this model provide?
802.1X authentication, local MAC authentication with automatic VLAN assignment, access control lists, RADIUS and TACACS+, SNMPv3, IPv4 and IPv6 dual stack. Dynamic segmentation can also place a user's traffic in a secure tunnel to an Aruba controller.
Is the switch new, and where can I find its datasheet?
