Frequently asked questions about this product
Does the S310S-24P4JX keep its cameras powered during an update?
Yes. Perpetual PoE keeps connected devices powered while the switch restarts, for example during a software upgrade: cameras and access points do not shut down. This model also supports Fast PoE, which restores power without waiting for the full boot.
How are the 400 W of PoE+ shared across the 24 ports?
400 W for all 24 ports together, each one 802.3af/at compliant and able to deliver up to 30 W. The budget has to be considered as a whole: 24 cameras at 12 W draw less than 300 W of it, whereas a dozen power-hungry Wi-Fi access points are enough to exhaust it. Add up the actual consumption before filling the chassis.
What is the difference between the SFP+ ports and the SFP ports on this model?
The two SFP+ ports run at up to 10 Gbps and serve as the uplink to the network core; the two SFP ports run at 2.5 Gbps, an intermediate speed designed for recent Wi-Fi access points and links between floors. All four slots take optical modules chosen according to the distance.
How many VLANs and MAC addresses does this switch handle?
4,094 VLANs and 16,000 MAC addresses maximum, with static, dynamic or blackhole entries to block a specific machine. Address learning and ageing are automatic, in accordance with the IEEE 802.1d standard.
What does this switch offer to avoid an outage on a fibre ring?
The ERPS protocol, defined by ITU-T G.8032, switches over to the backup link within a few milliseconds when a link in the ring goes down. STP, RSTP and MSTP remain available for conventional topologies, and LACP aggregation spreads traffic across several links while providing failover.
Can the S310S-24P4JX route between several subnets?
Yes: it supports static routes and policy-based routing, in addition to DHCP client, DNS client, ARP and NTP synchronisation. Enough to let two VLANs communicate without going up to the router, in a hotel, school or building infrastructure.
What protection does this switch offer against internal attacks?
Defence against denial-of-service, ARP and ICMP attacks, Secure Boot, port isolation, blackhole MAC entries, AAA authentication, CPU protection and DHCP snooping. The latter maintains a binding table and rejects packets that are not listed in it.
Does this model have a fan, and at what temperature does it operate?
Yes, with intelligent speed control: cooling is active, unlike the 8-port models in the series, which are passive. Plan to put it in a rack or a technical room. It operates continuously from -5 to +40 °C at altitudes of up to 1,800 m, with 5 to 95% non-condensing humidity.
Does this switch need an external power brick?
No, the power supply module is built in: a mains cord is all you need. It accepts 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz, and even a 240 V high-voltage DC input. The power port is protected against surges up to ±6 kV, in both differential and common mode.
How do you update the firmware without risking bringing down the network?
Smart upgrade relies on Huawei's online repository: the switch retrieves the recommended upgrade path itself, downloads the version and applies it with a single command. Preloading reduces the downtime, and the enforced path limits the risk of failure.
What performance and dimensions does this 1U chassis offer?
98 Gbps of switching capacity and 73 Mpps of forwarding rate, in a chassis 442 mm wide, 220 mm deep and 43.6 mm high, i.e. 1U. The interface offers eight queues per port, ingress and egress rate limiting, and IPv4 access control lists.
Is the switch new, and where can you find its documentation?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. The manufacturer's document describes the entire eKitEngine S310S series, model by model, with its switching, security and PoE features: PDF datasheet.
