Frequently asked questions about this product

Does the GWN7802 supply PoE to devices?
No: this is the version without PoE. Its 16 Gigabit ports carry data only. The GWN7802P, its counterpart, powers all 16 ports at up to 30 W each within a 240 W budget.
Is this 16-port switch noisy in a rack?
No, not at all: cooling is passive, with no fan. That is what sets the non-PoE version apart: it can be installed in an enclosure close to the offices without any noise.
How many VLANs does this switch support?
4,000 VLANs, with IEEE 802.1Q tagging, port-based VLANs and voice VLAN, plus VLAN virtual interfaces. GVRP, which would propagate VLANs automatically from one switch to the next, is listed as “pending”.
What are this model's 4 SFP slots for?
For Gigabit fibre uplinks: interconnecting buildings or linking up to the core switch, beyond copper's 100 metres. They can be aggregated together, up to 8 link aggregation groups.
Can this switch hand out the network's IP addresses?
Yes: a DHCP server and DHCP relay are built in, with options 82, 60, 160 and 43, useful for provisioning IP phones. DHCP snooping only accepts replies from ports declared as trusted.
How does the switch react to a cabling loop?
STP, RSTP and MSTP block the redundant path, with loopback protection, BPDU guard and root guard. Storm control caps broadcast bursts, and port security shuts down a port whose learned addresses exceed the limit.
What internal performance does this 20-port model offer?
40 Gbps of switching capacity, 29.76 Mpps and 20 Gbps of non-blocking throughput, in store-and-forward mode. The MAC address table holds 8,000 entries and the buffer memory reaches 4.1 Mbit.
How do you restrict network access to authorised computers?
With 802.1X backed by RADIUS or TACACS+, complemented by IP-MAC-VLAN-port quadruple binding, MAC address filtering, IP Source Guard, ARP inspection against gateway spoofing and 1,500 access control rules.
Does cloud management of this switch require a subscription?
No: GWN.Cloud and GWN Manager come at no extra cost, and the controller is built into the web interface. Three modes coexist — local web, cloud, platform on your own server — with CLI and SNMP v1, v2c and v3 as well.
Is the switch new, and where can I find its documentation?
